What Is A Pickleball Skill Rating?
A pickleball skill rating is a system used by pickleball players to determine their skill level. The numbers range from 1-6, with 1 being used for beginners and 6 being used for professional pickleball players.
Why Are Pickleball Skill Ratings Important?
Pickleball skill ratings are important (see also: What Is The Most Important Skill In Pickleball?)because they provide players and spectators with a way to group players of a similar skill level. This is helpful when it comes to competitions in tournament play, league play, and rec play.
If there were no accurate ratings in pickleball then there would be a risk of a skill disparity on the court during competitive games. This imbalance of skill levels may make the games less fun for players and spectators alike.
Not only that, but ratings that are inaccurate allow for sand-bagging. What Is My Pickleball Skill Rating: How To Calculate Pickleball Skill Ratings
There are many different ways to calculate your own pickleball skill rating. Some of these methods are objective but some are more subjective.
Here are the most common methods of calculating the individual pickleball skill rating of players:

1. Skill Level Definitions: Self-Assessment
If you have no experience playing pickleball and have not played in any leagues, then it is likely you will need a beginner rating to enter tournaments.
Because of this, you will need to give yourself a rating if you want to play pickleball professionally.
The best way to give yourself a rating is to read the Player Skill Rating Definitions written by USA Pickleball.
Here, you will find an outline of the skills necessary to play a good pickleball game, various shots, serve, volley, backhand, etc), and strategies necessary for moving up in the ratings.
Here is an example of the rating system chart and how it works!
1.0-2.0: Encompasses players who are beginners to pickleball and do not play any other sports
2.5: players who have limited pickleball experience and can perform a short rally
3.0: Applies to players who understand fundamentals and court positioning and fundamentals of the game
3.5: Players who understand the differences between soft and hard games of pickleball and can move quickly to the kitchen. Players with 3.5 ratings will also understand when to stack(see also: What Is Stacking In Pickleball?)
4.0: Players who know how to figure out their opponent’s weaknesses and use that to their advantage. They can work well with their partner
4.5: Players who have good footwork and understand pickleball strategy. They are able to communicate with their partner and work in tandem with them effectively
5.0: Players who have mastery over pickleball strategies and can move efficiently on the court. They rarely make errors and can adjust their game based on the weaknesses and strengths of their opponent
5.5-6.0+: Players who play pickleball at a professional level and have mastered the game
Once a player has assessed these guidelines and determined their skill level, they should seek the second opinion of others. It is a good idea to ask the opinion of pickleball ambassadors or USA tournament-rated players.
2. USA Pickleball Tournament Ratings
The official rating for sanctioned tournament play for USA Pickleball is known as the UPTR. This rating system is based on the sanctioned tournament loss and wins results.
So, your UPTR rating will be a 2-digit or 4-digit number. As a member of the USAPA, you will be able to access both your 2-digit and 4-digit ratings on your profile.
These ratings are calculated using USA Pickleball-approved tournament software and are based on matches taking place in tournaments sanctioned by USA Pickleball.
This is a more accurate way of determining your pickleball skill rating than the self-rating system. However, the win or loss is the only factor that counts here, not the score of the match.
These ratings also change on a weekly basis, meaning they do not update in real-time.
3. DUPR
Dynamic Universal Pickleball Ratings, or DUPR, is a system that was designed by Steve Kuhn in 2021 in an effort to provide an unbiased and accurate rating system for pickleball.
DUPR has an algorithm in place that provides a rating for each player based on their results, regardless of the type of event, the location of the event, or the software provider for the event.
These ratings are updated based on performance factors such as wins or losses, points scored, and type of match.
Again, these results are a more accurate reflection of your skills than the self-rating system. However, DUPR is still a relatively new rating system and it currently provides weekly updates, not updates in real-time.
Skill-Level Designations: Beginner, Intermediate, And Advanced
Beginner players will not yet have a DUPR or UPTR rating. So, any players who play pickleball at local community centers or YMCAs will be rated according to an entirely different system altogether.
This rating system is a lot more subjective and therefore unofficial.
Beginner
According to this system, beginners are those who have never played pickleball before. They are not familiar with the scoring system, where they should stand on the court, and need help to get through the game.
Intermediate
Intermediate players are players with some experience in playing pickleball and understand the rules of the game. This intermediate rating contains the largest scope of skills.
Advanced
According to this system, advanced players have a lot of experience playing pickleball at community centers and make very few errors during games.
